Summer Internships at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

Internships on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) are for undergraduate and graduate science and engineering students at either the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) or the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). ​

Must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Must be a high school graduate and attending/ enrolled in college.

Program Benefits

The SOCHE Summer Internship Program hosts students from higher education institutions throughout the United States and provides students an opportunity to develop scientific and engineering skills and competence through participation in cutting-edge research projects.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Summer Internship Program, you must be:

  • an undergraduate student or a graduating senior
  • a degree-seeking STEM student in good academic standing
  • a U.S. citizen

Application Process

Applications for the Summer Internship Program are submitted electronically by creating an account and selecting the WPAFB Summer Intern Program.

The application must be filled out completely and include three references, a résumé, and unofficial transcript. The résumé and transcript should be uploaded during the application process as PDF files.


Selection Process

The student intern selection criteria includes:

  • a transcript indicating academic field and level of achievement
  • a résumé
  • professional references
  • a match between student interests and available projects

There are a limited number of intern positions available and applications should be completed in a timely manner. For first consideration, apply by January 15.

Typically, the selection of interns is determined sometime in May. Selected interns will be notified by email. Those not selected will NOT receive notification.

Although SOCHE hires interns throughout the year, the summer program runs from May 1st to September 30th.
